Solarpunk, on the other hand, embodies optimism at its core. Like many genres and movements, solarpunk is a reaction to other popular sci-fi genres, primarily the dystopian cyperpunk.
In solarpunk, mesh renewable grids might electrify permaculture cities, while kelp-farmers thrive on abandoned offshore oil platforms. It’s a DIY world of green tech, upcycled goods, and scrappy nature-based design. Ecological ethics in this future expands to wider social awareness and the dissolution of problematic social constructs.
One of the things I find fascinating about solarpunk is that it’s a reversal of what I think of as the usual chain of events in sci-fi, where a writer imagines current trends going into the future with dangerous consequences.
