This renewable facility will have almost 450,000 solar panels and be able to produce more than 500,000 megawatt hours (MWh) per year, enough to cover the clean electricity consumption of over 200,000 Madrid homes. It will also prevent the annual emission into the atmosphere of 190,000+ tonnes of CO 2.
The state-owned company said the solar PV plant in Madrid-Barajas airport was “one of the most powerful” renewable energy production facilities in the airport sector worldwide. Construcciones San José will also be in charge of the maintenance of the solar PV project once it is completed.
The plant was inaugurated today by the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida. The largest photovoltaic solar self-consumption facility in the capital is located on the roof of the main manufacturing building, extending over an area of 30,000 m2 (equivalent to 4 football fields).
Construcciones San José will also be in charge of the maintenance of the solar PV project once it is completed. Moreover, the Madrid-Barajas airport will have another 7.5MW nominal solar PV plant of self-consumption set to be commissioned in 2023.
The board of directors of Aena, the company that operates the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport in Madrid, has approved plans for a 120 MW solar park. San José, an engineering, procurement and construction specialist, has signed a €99.1 million contract for the project. Construction will be competed within a time frame of 50 months, said Aena.
Solar installations will occupy an area equivalent to 353 soccer fields and will be located on different sites within the airport grounds. Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport is also working on a 7.5 MW solar plant. Commissioning is scheduled for 2023. This content is protected by copyright and may not be reused.
