Capacitor Bank calculator is used to find the required kVAR for improving power factor from low to high. Enter the current power factor, real power of the system/panel and power factor value to be improved on the system/panel. Then press the calculate button to get the required capacitor bank in kVAR.
Note: if you want to calculate the capacitor bank in VAR/MVAR means, just enter the real power in W or MW. Example, if you are entering it in kW mean, you get kVAR only. The same way work for W and MW.
Filter bank rating requirements and tuning point. Individual Capacitor kvar rating. Figure 1 shows how the cost per kvar for the capacitor alone (no other components) can change from near $10 per kvar for a 50-kvar two bushing capacitor, to near $2 per kvar for a 500-kvar capacitor two bushing capacitor.
Use calculator-2 when capacitor voltage, capacitive reactance, and frequency are known. Also on this page are calculators (calculator-3 and calculator-4) for applying capacitors on systems that deviate from their nameplate rating. Use these calculators to determine resulting output kvar and current for your specific application.
The required Capacitor kvar can be calculated as shown in example. Example: Initial PF 0.85, Target PF 0.98 kvar = kW X Multiplying factor from Table = 800 x 0.417 = 334 kvar required.
A capacitor bank corrects the phase difference and enables a consistent magnetic field. So, electrical distribution systems can perform at their peak. In such cases, you must install the capacitor with the required capacity. Otherwise, the phase difference will not be corrected entirely, and there will be a waste of power.
