Field is to break ground at its Newport battery storage site in South Wales in the coming weeks. The renewable energy infrastructure company has signed contracts with two key partners to construct the 40 MWh site, which will contribute to the UK’s efforts to decarbonise energy supply.
UK, 28 February 2024: Somerset will be home to a new multi-billion-pound electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility in the UK, it was confirmed today. Agratas, Tata Group’s global battery business, has confirmed that it will build a gigafactory on the Gravity Smart Campus near Bridgwater, Somerset.
With contracts signed, the Newport site is expected to be up and running in the third quarter of 2024. Founded in 2021, Field is dedicated to building the renewable energy infrastructure needed to reach net zero, starting with battery storage. Field’s first battery storage site, in Oldham (20 MWh), commenced operations in 2022.
The strong pipeline of battery storage projects marks a significant milestone and ongoing momentum in accelerating the energy transition. EDF Renewables UK has six projects in construction which are set to go live in the next 12 months, including a 57MW battery in Braintree, Essex and a 47.5MW battery in Indian Queens Saint Austell.
Currently, EDF Renewables UK has two 50 MW battery storage facilities operational in Kemsley and Oxford, with two more sites in the West Midlands becoming operational this autumn, and a further two sites currently in construction. The Braintree, Norwich and Sellindge battery storage sites are co-located with nearby solar projects.
