Battery-on-a-chip refers to the miniature power source integrated on a chip. This kind of battery allow the lab-on-a-chip systems and miniaturized medical devices can work independently without using an external power source , . Graphene has been considered as a promising material for the primary battery-on-a-chip.
An important parameter evaluating the practicability of an on-chip battery to be integrated into a microsystem is the pulse power because the on-chip microsystem often requires periodic data transmission demanding high power bursts. [ 30] There is no previous report about pulse power supply from state-of-the-art microbatteries.
In 2020, TDK successfully commercialized the world’s first all-ceramic, solid-state SMD *1 battery, CeraCharge®. Furthermore, in 2024, the company successfully developed a new solid-state battery material with an energy density approximately 100 times greater than conventional products.
A maximum actual capacity of 18 µAh is achieved at a current of 4 µA, and it decreases to about 3 µAh as the current increases to 15 µA. The charging/discharging time is about 0.2 h, showing the capability for fast charging and discharging. The corresponding footprint capacity (footprint area: 0.75 mm 2) decreases from 2400 to 400 µAh cm –2.
Microsized on-chip lithium-ion batteries Recently microsized lithium-ion batteries (micro-LIBs) have been developed for on-chip integration purposes . To achieve the desirable micro-LIBs, various approaches for battery configurations and electrode structures have been developed , , , .
Solid-state battery startup Talent New Energy closes new funding, has over 10 GWh of capacity planned Talent said its solid-state battery cell prototype has an energy density of 720 Wh/kg, which is twice the energy density of Nio supplier WeLion's semi-solid-state battery cell.
