Stockholm, Sweden – Northvolt today announced a state-of-the-art sodium-ion battery, developed for the expansion of cost-efficient and sustainable energy storage systems worldwide.
Nehrenheim, Northvolt’s chief environmental officer, said the company is able to recycle around 95% of a lithium-ion battery’s materials, which can then be used again in its production process, creating a circular supply chain. By 2030, the company wants all its new battery cells to be produced with 50% recycled material.
Northvolt said it will finalise its first sodium battery prototypes for energy storage later this year before developing a production line to manufacture them. Over the last 30 years, lithium has been used to manufacture rechargeable batteries that are lightweight, compact, and yet can store a lot of energy.
Northvolt battery plant in Skelleftea, a small city in northern Sweden. That produced a subsidy battle between Europe and the U.S. Berlin offered Northvolt a subsidy package worth about $1 billion to build a plant in Germany. Northvolt agreed, but Carlsson says it's still interested in a U.S. plant.
Production is scheduled to start in 2026. 6 March, 2024 | Gothenburg, Sweden – NOVO Energy, the joint venture between Northvolt and Volvo Cars, celebrated the start of construction for its highly anticipated battery factory in Torslanda, Gothenburg.
Lithium batteries used in electric cars have an energy density of up to about 250-300Wh per kg. Outside experts said that Northvolt had gone further than many Chinese competitors such as CATL, the world’s largest battery maker, which used oxides containing metals such as nickel, cobalt or manganese in their sodium-ion batteries.
