Iberdrola has completed the only mapping to check the operational public electric charging infrastructure in Spain. The information can be found on its Public Charging App and includes, so far, over 3,600 electric vehicle charging points on the public highway at 1,200 locations throughout the country.
Spain would need over 183,900 electric vehicle chargers to meet the European Union’s AFIR objectives by 2030. While its 30,345 public charging points available at the end of the fourth quarter of 2023 would already meet the 2024 target, Spain faces various challenges to expanding its charging infrastructure.
Iberdrola has made transport electrification one of the priorities of its strategy to transition toward a decarbonised economy based on renewable energy and smart networks, which is why it is stepping up the charging infrastructure plan in Spain, and implementing it in other markets where it operates, such as the United Kingdom, Portugal and Italy.
In addition, the roll-out has begun of the biggest network of rapid charging stations for electric vehicles on the major highways and traffic corridors in Spain.
Electric vehicle drivers using Iberdrola charging points can charge their electric vehicles with 100% green energy from clean generation sources with renewable Guarantee of Origin (GoO) certificates. “Decarbonising our economy is not just a matter for the energy sector.
Iberdrola’s electric mobility strategy also includes measures to provide digital solutions for streamlining electric vehicle charging for drivers. Iberdrola has updated its Public Charging App, adding up-to-date information about all Spain’s electric charging points.
