Short circuit protection is a method to protect electrical devices and systems from damage caused by a sudden and excessive flow of current known as a short circuit. A short circuit occurs when there is a fault or an unintended path for electricity, usually through a low resistance path.
A short-circuit current protection can cut off a discharge current within 1 micro second after detecting a short-circuit current. Though it is functionally similar to a discharge overcurrent protection, this short-circuit protection features its fast response to a large discharge current.
Battery manufacturers provide a value of short circuit current which needs to be used for validation of proper protection device. Duration of this short circuit current can be of few seconds before a battery failure occurs. The characteristic current and duration changes depending on the battery type.
