The aim of this paper is to introduce a system developed for monitoring PV solar plants using a novel procedure based on virtual instrumentation.
Photovoltaic instrumentation is a wide group of different measurement instruments used in photovoltaic systems. Most common are different panel meters, such as V-meters, A-meters, Ah- or kWh-meters.
Intelligent control as a more advanced technology has been integrated into the PV system to improve system control performance and stability. However, intelligent control for the PV system is still in the early stages due to the extensive calculation and intricate implementation of intelligent algorithms.
The system was developed for monitoring a stand-alone PV plant that supplies power to DC and AC loads. It provides facilities to get information through three kinds of measurements: Environmental and system variables (ambient temperature, solar radiation, current, voltage, energy, power, etc.).
A comprehensive solution for all these problems is being termed as PV monitoring system, whose job is to maximize the operational reliability of PV system with minimum system costs.
In order to estimate the potential of solar PV power generation, measurement of solar radiation at a particular site is essential. This section discusses various instruments used in solar radiation measurement. Radiometer is a device, which is used to measure the electromagnetic radiation. A radiation sensor is the key component in a radiometer.
