The battery production department focuses on battery production technology. Member companies supply machines, plants, machine components, tools and services in the entire process chain of battery production: From raw material preparation, electrode production and cell assembly to module and pack production. The production of the lithium-ion battery cell consists of three main process steps: electrode manufacturing, cell assembly and cell finishing. Electrode production and cell finishing are largely independent of the cell type, while within cell assembly a distinction must be made between pouch cells, cylindrical cells and prismatic cells.
This inline and offline inspection solution performs a complete 360° inspection of the cell to ensure 100% inspection and the delivery of only flawless cells. In addition to dimensional inspection, the cell inspection also detects surface defects and contamination. The system can also reliably check barcodes and data codes.
To inspect this with precision in prismatic battery cells, X-ray CT is a pre-requisite. Furthermore, to have a 3D model of each produced battery cell can be very helpful for forensics in case a battery cell fails in the field – in order to minimize a recall to an as small volume as possible.
An internal feature to be inspected during manufacturing of a battery is the anode overhang. The anode should be dimensioned to overlap the cathode. To produce this with repeatability puts high demands on the manufacturing and process precisions. To inspect this with precision in prismatic battery cells, X-ray CT is a pre-requisite.
Dual-energy X-ray transmission can identify battery chemistry and internal structure, allowing automated sortation into precise categories . Spectroscopic techniques, like laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), can rapidly characterize alloy composition . ... ...
