Who is responsible for ensuring battery compliance in the EU?

These rules are applicable to all batteries entering the EU market, independently of their origin. For batteries manufactured outside the EU, it will be the importer or distributor of the batteries into the EU that needs to ensure compliance of the batteries with the relevant requirements set out in the Regulation. via notified bodies.

What is the batteries regulation?

The Batteries Regulation is a new regulation that sets requirements for batteries and waste batteries placed in the EU market. It covers all types of batteries unless an exemption applies. In this guide, we explain when the regulation will begin to apply, and its differences from the prior Batteries Directive.

Are batteries regulated in the EU?

The current regulatory framework covers only the end-of-life stage of batteries through the Batteries Directive. There are currently no legal provisions in the EU that cover other aspects of the production and use phases of batteries, such as electrochemical performance and durability, GHG emissions, or responsible sourcing.

It aims to ensure that, in the future, batteries have a low carbon footprint, use minimal harmful substances, need fewer raw materials from non- European Union (EU) countries and are collected, reused and recycled to a high degree within the EU.

What are battery safety requirements?

These include performance and durability requirements for industrial batteries, electric vehicle (EV) batteries, and light means of transport (LMT) batteries; safety standards for stationary battery energy storage systems (SBESS); and information requirements on SOH and expected lifetime.

Which batteries are not covered by the EU directive?

The directive does not cover batteries used in equipment to protect EU countries' security or for military purposes, or in equipment designed to be sent into space. With some exceptions for portable batteries used in emergency and alarm systems or medical equipment.
