As rechargeable batteries, lithium-ion batteries serve as power sources in various application systems. Temperature, as a critical factor, significantly impacts on the performance of lithium-ion batteries and also limits the application of lithium-ion batteries. Moreover, different temperature conditions result in different adverse effects.
A profound understanding of the thermal behaviors exhibited by lithium-ion batteries, along with the implementation of advanced temperature control strategies for battery packs, remains a critical pursuit.
In this study, lithium-ion battery cells were discharged at constant current at 10 A, 35 A, 70 A and 140 A in the temperature range of 40 –20°C. The relationship between discharging voltage and capacity of the batteries is shown in Figs. 2.10, 2.11, 2.12 and 2.13.
The interaction between temperature regulation and lithium-ion batteries is pivotal due to the intrinsic heat generation within these energy storage systems.
Proper storage of lithium batteries is crucial for preserving their performance and extending their lifespan. When not in use, experts recommend storing lithium batteries within a temperature range of -20°C to 25°C (-4°F to 77°F). Storing batteries within this range helps maintain their capacity and minimizes self-discharge rates.
The results indicated that the specific heat of the batteries ranged from 870 to 1040 J kg -1 °C -1 at 25 °C. The specific heat of the batteries increased with temperature and exhibited less sensitivity to the state of charge (SOC), varying depending on the type of battery materials.
