The project, which was revealed by Grenergy in November 2023, will pair 1GW of solar PV with 4.1GWh of energy storage, which the company said makes it the largest energy storage projects in the world.
Chile also has huge lithium reserves which the state recently moved to gain control over. BYD will supply batteries for a project from Grenergy in Chile which has been claimed as the largest energy storage project in the world.
Source: BYD Singapore Spanish RE developer Grenergy Renovables, which is developing its flagship BESS project 'Oasis de Atacama' in Chile, has signed recently a supply agreement with the Chinese battery major BYD for battery energy storage systems for what is claimed as the world's largest battery storage project.
Independent power producers (IPP) like Grenergy are finding the Chilean market viable for adding storage capacities to existing and upcoming solar PV projects, thanks to the intermittency in solar energy generation in the country.
BYD has signed an agreement with Spain’s Grenergy to provide renewable energy power facilities using its blade-shaped batteries for a $1.4 billion energy storage operation in Chile’s Atacama Desert, which the companies claim to be the largest of its kind globally.
“Today, Chile is a superpower in terms of the development of energy storage due to the exceptional conditions of the Atacama Desert in terms of hours of solar radiation and the particularity of the energy mix of this vast area, where the penetration of solar energy reaches 50%,” said David Ruiz de Andrés, CEO of Grenergy.
