The plant is developed by Enel. Enel through EGBP has started operating its Lapa solar park, which is the biggest solar power project operation in Brazil at present. The plant is situated in Bom Jesus da Lapa, in the north-eastern state of Bahia. Lapa project is made up of 2 plants: Lapa- with an installed capacity of 78 megawatts.
The first solar power plant in Brazil, the Taua solar power plant, is located in the municipality of Taua in the state of Ceara. It was built in 2011 and has an installed capacity of 1 MW (1000 kWh). This power plant was the first in Brazil to generate solar power on a commercial scale, providing enough energy to power 650 homes.
Corporate and private investors are boosting solar panel production in one of Brazil’s few domestic manufacturing industries, as well as driving imports from China. Brazil’s solar power industry group Absolar sees DG investments tripling to 16 billion reais ($3.64 billion) in 2020 from last year.
According IRENA, Brazil's total installed solar energy capacity reached around 24.08 GW in 2022 increased from around 14.19 GW in 2021. The country expects to have 1.2 million solar power generation systems by 2024.
In May 2021, Brazil's total installed solar power was anticipated to be around 9.4 GW, generating roughly 1.46 percent of Brazil's overall energy demand, up from 0.7 percent in 2018. By 2024, Brazil intends to have 1.2 million solar units.
