The Consortium for Battery Innovation is a global research hub supported by ILA, commissioning pre-competitive research into next generation lead batteries. Through projects with leading academic institutions and industry it is helping spearhead breakthroughs in battery technology and performance.
Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) is a well-established battery technology that is employed in a wide array of different application scenarios. As the name implies, it utilises electrodes that are of thinner construction than those employed in conventional designs (and of higher purity too).
Through projects with leading academic institutions and industry it is helping spearhead breakthroughs in battery technology and performance. Over 85% of global lead is now used in the production of automotive and industrial batteries.
Lead is the sole equipment supplier for the pilot phase of the project and will design, manufacture, and assemble a customised turnkey solution of lithium-ion batteries. The whole pilot line, capable of producing 260,000 battery cells annually, aims to produce its first batteries by the end of this year.
In 2019, Lead began a partnership with European gigafactory developer Northvolt and within two years had delivered the first group of whole-line equipment. Both companies plan to continue cooperation and promote technical innovation based on the firms’ partnership during the first and second rounds of cooperation.
